Some links here earn money. This page says exactly which, how much, and what it does not change.
The short version
If you buy a book or book a ticket through a link on this site, I may receive a small commission. It costs you nothing extra — the price is the same as going direct.
Which links
Affiliate links appear in two places: the Where to buy box on a
review, and the Book tickets link in the practical box on a place.
They are labelled where they appear and carry rel="sponsored nofollow",
which is the marker search engines use.
Nothing else on the site is an affiliate link. Links inside the writing are ordinary links.
The programmes
- Bookshop.org — books. Supports independent bookshops
- Amazon Associates — books, where Bookshop does not stock the edition
- GetYourGuide — tickets and tours for the places written about
- Booking.com — accommodation
This list is kept current. If a programme is added it appears here before the first link does.
What it does not influence
Ratings and opinions. There is no financial reason to prefer a four-star book to a two-star one — the commission is identical either way, and a negative review carries the same links as a positive one. You will find books on this site I recommend you skip, with a link to buy them anyway, because you may disagree.
Which books get reviewed and which places get written about is decided before any question of earnings comes up.
Review copies
Publishers sometimes provide a book free of charge before publication. Where that has happened, the review says so at the top. A free copy buys coverage; it does not buy a good review, and it is never conditional on one.
What this pays for
Hosting costs a few euro a month. Beyond that, train tickets. The site is not a business and carries no advertising.
